Yin / Restorative Yoga
Yin yoga has SO many benefits both anatomically and physiologically.
So what is Yin? - Yin yoga is a cooling and calming flow where you stay in each posture for about 3-5 minutes or at least 10 breaths - as opposed to quickly moving from pose to pose as you would in a vinyasa practice. And you typically only stay in each pose one time as opposed to repetitive asanas/sequences in vinyasa.
Staying in one pose for a long duration is not easy at first & it gives you time to practice finding comfort in uncomfortable situations. It allows your mind to untangle & it allows the part of the body to deeply stretch and decompress.
What we do in Yin Yoga:
We apply stress to our fascia - through tension or compression
When you come out of the pose, you let go of the tension / compression and you’ll feel the feedback come up to the surface. This is why/ when many people experience crying in yin yoga - as a release of the awareness and the attachment to those emotional states. Which is why people refer to this style of yoga as even more introspective and clarity arising when compared to vinyasa.
Physiologically, 🧬you’re stimulating fascia through stretch of compression
Anatomically 🦴 since bone is a connective tissue, applying pressure in these poses for extended periods of times affect from the atomic to the tissue level AND it can actually make micro changes in your bone structures. I thought this was cool because I don’t know of many things that affect your bone composition like that.
Mentally 🧠 you become resilient as you stay in the discomfort. You free stuck emotions, feelings, and even traumas. You let them go, unattached from how they play a role in your life.
Learning to be patient in yin yoga and letting yourself have the time to explore postures with the depth that the longer time allows for creates a different rewarding experience each time you practice.
No two sessions of doing yin yoga will be the same as each other because you layer and constantly grow each time you practice.art harmonies with our professional choir in a single polished session.
